Celebrations for Pakistani Nurses for two consecutive years as The World Health Organization (WHO) executive board announced on 30 January 2019, that the following year 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and midwife” in honor of the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale “Lady with the Lamp” although we the nurses already celebrate her birthday as “Nurses Day” internationally on 12 May every year with professional and humanitarian honor and respect, yet WHO’s the international health leading and directive organization give us more to give honor and respect to the “Lady with the Lamp” who became the international symbol of Nursing.
Moreover, International Council of Nurses (ICN) also support the testimonial of the “Year of the Nurse and midwife” announced by the World Health Organization Executive Board (WHO-EB) along with the campaign of “Nursing Now”, as, both recognize the contribution of Florence Nightingale to health and humanity. With all gratitude to the honorable President Dr Arif Alvi, who not only announced the launch of the ‘Nursing Now’ chapter of Pakistan from 2019, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Council of Nurses, to raise the status and profile of nursing profession in Pakistan but also declared 2019 as “The Year of Nursing in Pakistan” to highlight the role of nurses and midwife in promoting universal healthcare. President further considered nursing profession as the backbone of the healthcare sector. The president made these announcements at the first Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery summit and the launch of Nursing Now Pakistan campaign ceremony on 8th January 2019.

Further, the celebration of “Nurses day” helps to practice the nursing profession through learning, sharing of expertise and best practice involving in nursing care. The aim of the celebration is to raise awareness of the important role nurses play in the society and the contributions, commitments of nurses among common public in providing the best health care services. Every year, the ICN choose a theme internationally for all nurses to discuss, prepare, and distribute an international nurse’s day kit having educational and public information materials.
