Title             :         Advance Concepts in Nursing – III
Course No.  :         715
Time            :         6 Credits (3theory, 3 clinical).
Placement   :         Year-II, Semester-I (Overall Semester – III)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course introduces a holistic approach to psychiatric- Mental Health
Nursing by applying the nursing process to models of promotion, prevention and care diverse settings. Personal and cultural psychiatric nurse within the mental health system are integrated.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the ends this course students will be able:
1.     Demonstrate an awareness and acceptance of mental health and illness as legitimate health issues.
2.     Describe the nursing process as applied to psychiatric- mental health nursing.
3.     Explain the major classes of mental illness with therapeutic nursing interventions.
4.     Recommend ways to promote mental health and prevent mental illness.
5.     Demonstrate professional responsibility and accountability in Clinical practice

TEACHING LEARNING STRATEGIES:

 Pre-reading assignments, lectures, small group discussion, role play, individual presentation and pre-post conferences.

COURSE EXPECTATION:

Active participation in class.
Weekly clinical practices.
Written nursing care plans in clinical area
Completion of assignment and exam.
Appropriate feedback with suggestions to help meet own and others learning needs
Active participation in pre-post conferences / tutorials.

ADVANCE CONCEPT NURSING – III

Mental Health and Mental Illness
·        Introduction of course
·        Personal and cultural perceptions, values and belief about mental health and mental illness.

Unit – II

Therapeutic Communication
·        Anxiety disorder and Anti-anxiety medication
·        Panic disorder
·        Obsessive compulsive disorder.
·        Mental status examination.
·        Mental Disorders and Nursing process.
·        PTSD.
·        Self-awareness.
·        Self-concept / Self-esteem.
·        Mood Disorder & Mood stabilizers.
·        Depression.
·        Family Therapy.
·        Manic Depressive psychosis

Unit – III

Schizophrenia
·        Altered Thought Process.
·        Personality disorders.
·        Borderline personality.
·        Passive- aggressive personality.
·        Antipsychotic medications.

Unit – IV

Therapeutic Interventions
·        Cognitive & Behavioral therapies.
·        Suicide
·        Therapeutic Interventions

CLINICAL OBJECTIVES:

These objectives are developed to integrate the knowledge of theory into practice. Integrating various courses would help to develop critical thinking, problem-solving & decision making abilities at the Post RN BScN level.

On the clinical day the students are expected to:

1.     Apply theoretical knowledge to psychiatric-mental health nursing practice in hospital settings.
2.     Demonstrate increased self-awareness and self-understanding reflected in clinical practice.
3.     Apply therapeutic communication skills while caring for clients.
4.     Demonstrate use of nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation) in the care of clients with mental health problems.
5.     Explore and analyze issues that contribute in promoting mental health and preventing mental illness.
6.     Recognize nurses’ role as health educator, once patient needs are identified, plan/ conduct health education session.
7.     Perform all required skills, maintaining clients’ safety.

8.     Identify and evaluate the mental health care services available in community
